The disaster in Haiti killed hundreds. With the disaster so tragic, millions began to help out by sending money through organizations such as the Red Cross. Seeing the face of the disaster, America jumped to help. In my opinion, this was a good move. That is because if anything such as that had happened to us, then we would need help from outside countries too. However, America should have only helped Haiti get back on its feet. If America were to continue efforts years after, we would just be digging ourselves in a hole. We would collect more debt then we already have. Of course we should help, but not on the means where we destroy ourselves. It could also be a bad move donating too much because with every other disaster occurring, people would think America was obligated to help. Even now with Japan, who suffered a far more tragic disaster, what is too much? We cannot simply decide not to help at all because of the fact that it is important for other nations to appreciate and like us. As for the future, America should stay out of this issue. There is no certain way to prevent a disaster like this. If there is going to be an earthquake, then there will be an earthquake and we cannot stop it. Sure we could build stronger buildings and such, but that is spending our money on another nation when we need to be focusing on ourselves. It sounds selfish but with the way the economy is today we cannot afford to send all of our money to other countries. Emergency care is the way to go, but should not last forever.
